This week, we join the global community in marking World Glaucoma Week, led by the World Glaucoma Association. This year’s theme, "Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World," highlights the power of collaboration in the fight against glaucoma-related vision loss.
Did you know?
• Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide, affecting over 80 million people globally.
• It’s often called the "silent thief of sight" because it typically has no symptoms in its early stages.
• Once vision is lost to glaucoma, it cannot be restored—but with early detection and treatment, further vision loss can be prevented.
How treatment saves vision:
• Eye drops: The most common first-line treatment, these help reduce intraocular pressure (IOP), slowing the progression of glaucoma.
• Laser therapy: Procedures like selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) can improve fluid drainage in the eye, lowering IOP.
• Surgery: In more advanced cases, surgical options like trabeculectomy or minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) can help preserve remaining vision.
• Regular monitoring: Ongoing care and adjustments to treatment plans are essential to manage the condition effectively.
The key takeaway? Early detection is everything. A simple eye test can spot glaucoma before it causes significant damage, and timely treatment can save your sight.
At the Partially Sighted Society, we’re fully committed to supporting those living with glaucoma to live full and independent lives, even if they have lost their vision due to this condition.
How you can help:
Spread the word: Share facts about glaucoma to raise awareness.
Encourage eye tests: Remind friends and family to book regular eye exams—especially if they’re over 40 or have a family history of glaucoma.
Support our cause: Donate to, or raise funds
