Something Truly Extraordinary

Something Truly Extraordinary

One year ago, our friend Bob Coote did something truly extraordinary.

At 92 years old, and living with macular degeneration, Bob climbed into the cockpit of a two-seater Spitfire at Biggin Hill and took to the skies over Kent. It was a moment decades in the making.

Back in the late 1940s, Bob served as an Air Cadet and flew over the very same Dover cliffs in a Tiger Moth biplane. Last April, he saw them again from a Spitfire. "What a real thrill to see those very cliffs again," he said.

The team at flyaspitfire.com were wonderful, offering full briefings in written, video, and audio formats, and welcoming partially sighted guests like Bob with open arms. As General Manager Darren Dray put it, the experience goes far beyond what you can see: "The sound and smell of the flight are just as powerful as the view."

Bob's story is a beautiful reminder that the spirit of adventure has no age limit, and that extraordinary experiences are absolutely within reach for people with sight loss.

Here's to you, Bob. An inspiration to us all.
