June is Cataracts Awareness Month!
This month, The Partially Sighted Society is spotlighting cataracts, a major cause of sight loss worldwide. Let's raise awareness together.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts occur when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, typically due to ageing. This cloudiness leads to blurred or dim vision and can make everyday activities increasingly difficult.
Causes and Risk Factors:

While ageing is the primary cause, several other factors can contribute to cataracts, including:

• Diabetes
• Prolonged UV exposure
• Smoking
• Eye injury or inflammation
• A family history of cataracts
• Long-term use of corticosteroid medications

How Cataracts Affect Daily Life:
Cataracts can interfere with many routine tasks, such as:
• Reading small print, especially in poor lighting
• Watching television or seeing facial details clearly
• Driving at night, due to glare from headlights
• Distinguishing between similar colours, like navy and black
• Spending time in bright sunlight, which can become uncomfortable due to light sensitivity
Treatment Options:
The most effective treatment is surgery, in which the cloudy lens is replaced with a clear artificial one. Cataract surgery is safe, routine, and improves vision in approximately 95% of cases.
How The Partially Sighted Society Can Help:
PSS provides practical and emotional support for people living with cataracts, including:
• A wide range of visual aids and magnifiers
• Access to assistive technology and training
• Advice on adapting to changes in vision
• Support to remain independent and active
